Show and Tell - Quiz

Time for Kelli's Show and Tell http://kellishouse.blogspot.com/ Thanks, Kelli, for hosting! Last week I shared my handpainted wooden shoe "tree." Someone (HazelRuth, I think) said it is a "shoe last," used as a mold/pattern when the pointed toe shoes were being made.

Do you know what this is?

It's a shoe buttoner, used on the old-fashioned high-top shoes that had loops instead of button holes. The little hook pulled the loops over the small buttons.

At one time I had this shoe buttoner hanging on the wall among a wall grouping. I haven't displayed it in a long time. Do you have any suggestions of a good way to display it now?

This past week I participated in the http://makeminepink.blogspot.com/ virtual tea parties. It is two posts below and the tea is still hot, if you would like to join me for a cuppa tea! Also go to MakeMinePink to see LOTS of beautiful tea parties!

That's really a unique antique. I go to lots of antique stores, and rarely see those.

Very pretty piece of history. It looks great against that bold backdrop. Maybe you could frame it with it attached to something colorful and bold like that to show it off well...

I have a shoe buttoner very similar to this and some of the old shoe buttons and would love an idea on how to display these. I used to keep the buttoner on my dresser with other antiquities, but it just got lost with everything else. Hope you find an idea that I can borrow. ;)

How fabulous is that? Great find!

This has to be very old. I certainly would display it somehow.

very interesting. And to the post below. Yay for dolly winning your tea cup. She was my swap partner in the Vintage Kitchen swap I held over at garboodles Soup. I loved the goodies she sent me... which I will posting on my soup blog next week. Have a great day.

Oh, oh!! Does that age me or what? I knew what it was before I read your answer. I'm not that old, am I?

My show and tell is shared, if you have time, I'd love for you to drop by.

Your shoe button is really pretty. I think I would have gone barefoot after one day of those shoes.

This is the first time I've ever seen this type of hook and how interesting to find out what it was for!! Have you ever thought of putting it in a Shadow Box along with other vintage pieces? xo

That is a neat bit of history. I never thought about how they got all those buttons done up. I'm sure this tool was very useful!

I knew what it was right away, as my Grandma had one I used to play with. Have you seen those high button shoes that are made of ceramic? You could get one of those with a plant or arrangement in it and lay the buttoner beside it.

It would be really neat if you could find an old button up shoe to display with it.

Thanks for sharing!

I have an old milk bottle opener that had the same design as the top part of your shoe buttoner. Interesting.
I have mine hanging on my kitchen wall with my old milk tops. Maybe you have something that relates to old shoes or buttons that you could group it with.

I have a shoe buttoner that my dear little mother framed many years ago for me. She carefully stitched the top and bottom to the fabric-covered cardboard and mounted it in an old oval frame she painted an antique gold. Next to the buttoner (also called button hook) she stitched several small shoe buttons. Mine is done on black velvet so the yellow-y gold of the buttoner and the buttons shows well. I took it off the wall to paint and haven't put it back. I'll take a picture soon and share it on my blog. ~Adrienne~
