Giving Thanks - Monday

I'm participating in Kelli's Giving Thanks this week. Go here to see more.

Today I'm sharing my Thanksgiving cactus. I thought it was a Christmas Cactus, but last week I went outside on our porch and was surprised to see it is blooming already, just in time for Thanksgiving! I remember my grandmother always had a big cactus like this blooming each Thanksgiving, she called it a Thanksgiving cactus too since that is when it bloomed.

Do you have a Thanksgiving or Christmas cactus that is blooming?

Thank you for your interest, it is so appreciated. Please leave a comment, and please do return soon!

Katherine

My mom has a cactus like this. I'll have to ask her if hers is blooming or not:)

Your cactus is great! I don't have too much of a green thumb. My aunt that I speak of, she has a beautiful blooming Christmas cactus.

Your cactus is so pretty, Katherine. When I was a new bride I was given a piece of my own grandmothers cactus. The mother plant is 50 or 60 years old - mine is 38 years old now! It has grown to become a huge plant and it still blooms every year.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Sooo pretty...I ran to check mine, but alas...no blooms...or even buds! We moved this past summer, so I am not sure mine will bloom this year or not...very tempermental and it loved it's prior location...we'll see.

Have a beautiful day,
Susie

Oh, how lovely! Are they hard to grow? I have a "black thumb", but I would love to have a cheerful plant like that. I love the colorful blooms. By the way, that pot you have it in is quite attractive as well. I have never seen anything like it.

Hi Katherine! Yes, I had closed up the blog for awhile. But I am back.

Your cactus is just beautiful. Do you want to know the secret?? It is the cool night temps. As soon as temps start getting cool at night .. down into the low 60s and 50s ... (trusting the cactus is outside) then it sets buds.

Mine is setting buds now. Which leads me to believe you have had night time temps cooler than mine or at least a bit earlier.

I have a huge plant, and a small one. My small one is the same color as yours. And my large on is white. I'll post a pic when it blooms.

Have a happy Thanksgiving.

It was nice to hear from you.

I love your cactus. A few years ago I bought a Christmas cactus. The following year, it didn't bloom for Thanksgiving or Christmas. Then on Easter, it bloomed. It was an Easter cactus from then on.

I don't have a Thanksgiving cactus. Mine is looking like it might be a post-Christmas one this year ;-) My Christmas orchid that was a gift last year is blooming. Maybe I need to change it's name, but the blooms should last until Christmas.
