How to Decaffeinate Tea

The Tea Room, Savannah, GA provided these directions for decaffeinating tea leaves.

"Caffeine is highly soluable and is one of the first constituents of the tea leaf to be extracted in steeping. Usually 80 percent of the tea's caffeine content is released within the first 20 to 30 seconds of steeping. You can enjoy virtually caffeine free tea with small sacrifice of flavor. Therefore, by discarding the water after the first 30 to 60 seconds of steeping and adding fresh hot water to the now decaffeinated leaf...."

I can't tolerate caffeine, so I use this method often, this way I can enjoy teas that don't come decaffeinated. Click on the picture above to read all of the information.

Hi Katherine,
I see you decaffinate your own tea! How interesting. You mentioned in your comment on my post about the Mountain Dew. I don't "do the dew" but if they have a decaf drink I'm sure that would work in the pie. You could even use the diet dew and I'm sure that would work too.
Thanks for stopping by to see me. I can't converse with you much on the tea since I don't know much about it but I'm learning new things here in case I ever learn to like it!!

Hugs,
Hope

I'd never heard of this before. It is good to know. Thanks for sharing! I can have caffeine but I may not want it in the evening.

I would love to visit The Tea Room as I've read about them and seen photos so often. I'm a big Mackintosh fan so even their graphics make me happy.

This is great information since I don't drink any beverage with caffeine. I usually get my Earl Grey and Constant Comment teas
decaffeinated, but it is good that I can try others and use this process.
Thanks, Katherine. As always, I learn something new from your delightful posts.
