Space Shuttle Astronaut

Tiny dried rose buds necklace made by Nicole Stott

Most of you know my husband and I are retired from NASA, where we worked at Kennedy Space Center (FL) for many years. We still keep up with the Space Shuttle launches and sometimes if the weather is clear we can see the launches from where we live (we now live 100 miles north of KSC.)

I just found out this weekend about one of the astronauts (the only woman) scheduled to launch Tuesday at 1:30 a.m., weather permitting. She is one of the young engineers in the same office I worked in back in about 1995 (I've forgotten the exact years.) She went on to become an astronaut a few years after we both left that office. I knew she was going to train to become an astronaut, but I lost track of her after she left KSC and went to Johnson Space Center to training.

Her name is Nicole Stott, she has remarried (with a new last name) since we were in the same office, she also has a 7-year-old son. I'm excited for her, but a little worried too since I also found out she is going to the Space Station and stay on it for three months, and she'll do a space walk!! Yikes!

A while ago I did a show and tell about her making me a darling tiny dried rose bud necklace. They are attached to a pink ribbon and pearls.

Another time I mentioned her was when I featured a Precious Moments figurine holding a string of hearts (named "You have touched many hearts!") She was one of the people who gave me the figurine! I always think of her when I look at this figurine, and the necklace!

Just thought I would share this bit of trivia with all of you!

Here's a recent picture of Nicole:

If you think about it (and when you hear news about the Space Shuttle and Space Station) please pray for Nicole's safety, etc., during the next three months! Thanks!

Have a happy day!
God Bless.

Saturday's NOTE: The Space Shuttle launch went successfully last night! PTL! When Nicole gets to the Space Station I will follow her blog she will be doing for More magazine.

Hi Katherine,
What a truly wonderful and inspiring person Nicole is! I will pray for her safety and success with her mission.

I didn't realize you were retired from NASA. How fantastic!
My hubby wants to be an astronaut as well. He has already applied earlier this year and was approved by the Marine Corps to send his package to Houston. As you know they only chose a select few. He will apply again when the time comes again in a few years. His degree is in Aerospace Engineering so if not an astronaut he would like to work for them as an engineeer. Time will tell as he has some years left before retiring from the Marine Corps.

~Blessings my friend, ~Melissa :)

Hi KK,
That is just a wonderful keepsake. I pray all will go well with her mission.
Hubs and I had lunch a couple of years ago with astronaut Jon McBride at NASA. It was a treat meeting him.

We were watching a recent broadcast about the space station and this next launch a week or so ago. Here in Huntsville, we have a cable channel that is just NASA. I forget these things are going on because we don't hear much about it on local or national news stations. Same with the war. I think it should still get as much coverage as ever.
How neat that you know one of them personally. It should make keeping up with it more fun.

Good morning dear Katherine:-)

I had no idea you and your hubby were retired from NASA...how very interesting!! Such a precious memento you have from Nicole, what a treasured necklace and figurine. I can well imagine how worried you are about her being up in space for 3 months! My prayers are with her and the others, may they have safe travels. xoxo

Very interesting. I don't consider this trivia. Very interesting. Thanks for dropping by and leaving a comment. I haven't been visiting much lately. We have been very busy and now have relatives visiting from California. With all the visiting during the day and trying to keep up with my book reviews I haven't had much time left for blog visiting. Is that a new picture of you on your profile page or am I just now waking up?

Oh great to hear of someone after time has passed. That is such an exciting adventure...Prayers for a safe launch...

How neat that both you and your husband worked at NASA! My hubby is now a retired Army aviator...but years ago, when we wer first married he was an AF crash rescueman at Holloman AFB and was part of the rescue team for the shuttle landing at White Sands Missile Range.

Blessings & Aloha!
(thank you also for leaving your comment...I'm happy you enjoyed my artwork. Please do keep them in mind for any future gifts :o) I actually had a couple of orders for the space shuttle in the past.)
